Juror’s Statement

With a healthy number of spots available in the show, and no over-arching theme binding the entrants, I was able to choose a wonderful variety of photographs for the exhibition of the 4th Open Call for the Providence Center for Photographic Arts. One gets very consumed by both the edit and then how the images will work together overall. Looking across the more than 1,000 images, I really wanted to include portraits, nature, abstracts, interesting processes, collage – and a little bit of politics. I tend to have quite traditional taste in photography, but I like to be challenged by innovative post-production as seen in a couple of the chosen pieces. It is also important to me to show that an artist need not necessarily stray far from home to make good work, and I think that comes across strongly.

We all see and take so many images every single day, but we are not all photographers. Congratulations to the winners, and commiserations to those with images not chosen, some of which I really struggled with.
